Coronavirus: Light at the End of the Tunnel?

Anxious. Bored. Restless.

These are some of the feelings I get when heading into the 3rd week in the state of California’s shelter in place order. It's expected to end on April 7th. I have a feeling this will be extended.

If you are just coming out a shell somewhere, there’s a virus that started in China first reported in January and has since spread around the world making it a full pandemic. Countries have been placed on high alert to stop the spread of this virus, called Coronavirus or Covid-19. It's believed to have been spread from animal to human and eventually spread from human to human. It's a respiratory so, any close contact with someone who has it can spread it by a cough, surface touch, or close confinement can get infected. In most cases, the outcome can be deadly.

I watch news reports from various media outlets and it has made most people very anxious and rightfully so. There is conflicting information that both government and media are unable to square the dissemination of information to the public. This definitely causes the effect many people are encountering. Some will come to their own conclusions on what and what not to do and can infect others. It definitely showed how unprepared we are as a population when both government and media are unable to be on the same page with very important health information.

As days go on, many of us, I imagine are getting quite bored with trying to manage their own situation of being in all day, having to work from home, and managing your ways to have provisions on hand. There's only so much one can do at home. Do we start cleaning the entire house; do we start on new projects to fill the void of extra time on our hands? Where do you begin?

As this new week begins, many will probably get past the idea of being restless. I certainly haven't. I'm feeling that I don't have any control on what’s been happening. Do we just take it all in and apply some of the health measures to keep ourselves safe and healthy? It's quite a flurry of information. Is it a new normal? Many thoughts go through your mind.

I can only think of one thing right now; it's to adapt and take in self-awareness. Each individual must manage themselves the best way they can. I do have a few suggestions. These just might help.

  • Accept the moment. It's clearly something we all don't have answers outright. I think once we see it for what it is, we would be less anxious.
  • Control what you can. If work has to be done from home, than focus on what you can do to make it less stressful and more of an "off-site" work environment. If all your resources are available, work it out to best of your ability.
  • Take it as a new perspective. Easily said, right? But, if you can take one step at a time, the better. Put yourself in some type self-management mode. Choose times to best watch news about Coronavirus updates. It allows you to prepare for any changes that you can take in.

  • More than ever, connect with family and friends. Check on their well-being, get updates on their lives, who knows, you might be missing out on something important in their lives that you didn’t know about. It allows to be connected with loved ones and not feel alone. Remember, we are all in it together.

I've accepted it that it's going to be a long haul. But, having been at this for two weeks, I'm finding my rhythm, i.e. working from home, less commute time, starting or finishing projects on my to do list. For me, this simple blog helps me "manage" myself and clear the fog in my head in preparing for the week ahead. Who knows, the light at the end of tunnel just might be brighter.

    Be safe and healthy everyone!
